Beyond IYA2009

IYA2009 created a revolution in school-age involvement in astronomy and astronomy-related activities, and many programs are continuing. Materials and Web sites created by IYA cornerstone projects are still in distribution, with new activities emerging all the time. riIDA continues to work with the Dark Skies Awareness Cornerstop Project to enhance the awareness of light pollution, create solutions, and engage the next generation in caring for the nighttime environment. The International Year of Astronomy 2009 is a global effort initiated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the day- and night-time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery.
